How it differs from OpenAI's earlier parental controls

OpenAI introduced account-linking and parental-control features in 2025, letting parents connect their account to a teen's and toggle settings like memory, voice mode, and image generation. ChatGPT for Teens goes further by building a distinct, teen-oriented product experience on top of those controls, rather than only offering settings within the standard adult app.

The Study Mode option will give teens guiding questions and step-by-step support to help them understand the material.

Why now

The launch follows lawsuits, including one filed in Florida, alleging that chatbot interactions contributed to teen suicides or mental health crises. OpenAI has faced pressure from regulators and parent advocacy groups to build stronger age-appropriate safeguards as its products have become widely used by teenagers, in some cases years before this dedicated teen product existed.

For parents
