Appliance shopping usually comes down to a sticker: a coloured scale from green to red, a letter grade, and a few numbers about annual energy and water use. Those figures are genuinely standardised and genuinely useful, but they answer a narrower question than most shoppers assume. They tell you how the appliance performs on a fixed laboratory test cycle, not how it will perform in your kitchen with your habits.
What the label actually measures
The EU Energy Label uses a harmonised test protocol for each appliance category, so a washing machine's kWh-per-cycle figure is comparable across brands because every unit ran the same programme under the same conditions. The scale was rescaled in recent years specifically because too many models had clustered at the top, and A+++ style stacking had stopped meaningfully differentiating products. Today's A rating is deliberately hard to achieve, which restores some discrimination to the top of the scale.
Energy Star, used in the United States, works differently: it is a pass or fail certification rather than a graded scale, meaning a qualifying appliance meets a minimum efficiency threshold but the label itself does not tell you how far above that threshold it sits. For finer comparisons between two Energy Star models, the EnergyGuide yellow tag with its estimated annual operating cost is the more useful document.
Where the numbers can mislead
Laboratory cycles use fixed load sizes, water temperatures and default settings. A household that runs half-loads, favours a hot wash, or uses a heated dry setting on a dishwasher will see materially higher consumption than the label implies. The label is a comparison tool between products, not a forecast of your bill.
Repairability: the newer, less familiar score
Separate from the energy label, some categories now carry a repairability or durability index, scoring criteria such as availability of spare parts, ease of disassembly, availability of repair documentation, and how long the manufacturer commits to supplying parts after the sale. This score does not appear on every product yet, and coverage varies by country and category, but where it exists it is one of the few standardised proxies for how long an appliance is likely to remain economically worth fixing.
