Reading a water test
Lead is the measurement most worth taking seriously even at low levels, because health guidance treats it as having no safe threshold for ongoing exposure, particularly for children; regulatory action levels exist for enforcement purposes, not because levels below them are considered risk-free. Lead in household water usually originates from plumbing rather than the source, which is why flushing taps after periods of disuse and checking for lead solder or old lead pipework are the standard first steps.
Nitrates are mainly a concern in areas near agricultural runoff and are specifically flagged for infant formula preparation, since regulatory limits are set with that vulnerable use in mind. Hardness, measured in grains per gallon or milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate, is not a health measure at all; it is a nuisance measure describing scale buildup and soap performance, and treating it is a comfort and appliance-longevity decision rather than a safety one.
