A television specification sheet is written to make two nearly identical panels look like different products. Read it in the order below and most of the manufactured distinctions fall away, leaving the handful of things that actually decide how the picture looks once the set is on your wall.
Start with the panel, not the resolution
Almost every television sold today is 4K, so resolution rarely differentiates two sets in the same size class. What differentiates them is the panel technology and how it controls light: whether it is an emissive panel where each pixel makes its own light, or a backlit panel whose contrast depends on how many independent dimming zones it has. That single distinction affects black level, contrast and viewing angle more than any number in the headline spec.
The numbers that actually matter
- Native refresh rate — the real panel rate (commonly 60 or 120), not a marketing "effective" or "motion" figure that multiplies it with processing.
- Sustained brightness and local dimming — peak brightness in a small window is easy; what matters is full-screen brightness and how many dimming zones control it.
- Panel type and its trade-offs — emissive panels excel at contrast and viewing angle; backlit panels can go brighter but rely on dimming zones to control blooming.
- HDR format support — which high-dynamic-range formats the set actually decodes, since this changes how much content looks its best.
The upsell tell
Any specification with the words "effective", "motion", "dynamic" or "index" attached to a number is usually a processed figure, not a measured one. Find the native, un-prefixed value — that is the one you can compare across brands.
