For years, running shoe advice followed a simple script: watch someone run on a treadmill, classify their foot as neutral, overpronating or underpronating, then sell them a shoe engineered to correct that pattern. Newer research has undermined the assumption that this correction reliably prevents injury.
What the evidence actually shows
Several systematic reviews in sports medicine journals have failed to find a consistent link between prescribing shoes by pronation category and reduced injury rates, and some have found that runners given shoes matched to their reported comfort had lower injury rates than those assigned shoes by biomechanical category. This has led a number of sports medicine bodies and shoe fit specialists to shift emphasis toward comfort-based selection.
What comfort-based selection means in practice
Rather than starting from a pronation label, try on several models in your regular running distance range and pay attention to where you notice pressure, rubbing or instability within the first few minutes of wear. A shoe that feels immediately comfortable across a short test run is more likely to remain comfortable over longer distances than one chosen purely on a biomechanical label.
Sizing is not standardised across brands
Shoe sizing systems are set by national and international standards bodies, including ISO conventions for foot measurement, but manufacturers apply their own lasts and fit philosophies on top of that base. A given nominal size can fit differently between two brands, which is why trying shoes on, or ordering with a clear return policy, matters more than reading a size chart alone.
