How to choose running shoes without relying on a gait-analysis myth

The old advice to match shoes to arch type has been quietly dropped by much of the sports-science community. Here is what current guidance suggests instead.

What the evidence actually shows

Several systematic reviews in sports medicine journals have failed to find a consistent link between prescribing shoes by pronation category and reduced injury rates, and some have found that runners given shoes matched to their reported comfort had lower injury rates than those assigned shoes by biomechanical category. This has led a number of sports medicine bodies and shoe fit specialists to shift emphasis toward comfort-based selection.

What comfort-based selection means in practice

Rather than starting from a pronation label, try on several models in your regular running distance range and pay attention to where you notice pressure, rubbing or instability within the first few minutes of wear. A shoe that feels immediately comfortable across a short test run is more likely to remain comfortable over longer distances than one chosen purely on a biomechanical label.

Sizing is not standardised across brands

Shoe sizing systems are set by national and international standards bodies, including ISO conventions for foot measurement, but manufacturers apply their own lasts and fit philosophies on top of that base. A given nominal size can fit differently between two brands, which is why trying shoes on, or ordering with a clear return policy, matters more than reading a size chart alone.

Practical fit checks

  • About a thumb's width of space beyond the longest toe when standing, to allow for foot swelling during longer runs.
  • No slippage at the heel when walking or jogging in place.
  • No pressure points across the widest part of the foot, particularly for runners with wider forefeet.
  • Try shoes on later in the day, when feet have naturally swollen slightly, for a more representative fit.

When to change shoe type gradually

Switching abruptly to a shoe with a very different heel-to-toe drop, stack height or level of cushioning changes the load on tendons and joints. Sports medicine guidance generally recommends introducing a new shoe type gradually over several weeks alongside familiar footwear, rather than switching entirely for a long run.

Injury history changes the calculation

Runners with a history of specific injuries, such as stress fractures or plantar fasciitis, may benefit from an individual assessment by a physiotherapist or podiatrist rather than relying on general retail guidance.

  1. Prioritise immediate, in-store comfort over a pronation label.
  2. Check fit using swelling-adjusted, later-in-day trial and a thumb's width of toe space.
  3. Expect sizing to vary by brand even within the same nominal size.
  4. Introduce any new shoe type gradually rather than switching outright for a long session.
Comfort at the point of choosing has turned out to be a better predictor of injury-free running than the pronation label on the box.
