An everyday account is judged on what it costs when you do nothing unusual, and on how it behaves on the bad day: a disputed payment, a card lost abroad, an overdraft you did not plan. We read each provider's published fee schedule and deposit-protection wording rather than its marketing page, and we do not quote a rate we cannot see on the provider's own site.

Fee-free everyday banking with a usable app and real support.

9.0

People who bank entirely online and want no monthly fee.

What we liked

  • No monthly maintenance fee and no overdraft fee
  • Reimbursed out-of-network ATM fees up to a monthly cap
  • Round-the-clock phone support

What we didn't

  • No branch network
  • Cash deposits require a partner network
#2Best hybrid

Capital One 360 Checking

Online account with physical cafés and branches behind it.

8.6
Price

No monthly fee

Best for
Anyone who wants online banking but occasional counter service.

What we liked

  • No monthly fee or minimum balance
  • Branches and cafés in several states
  • Mature mobile app

What we didn't

  • Branch coverage is regional
  • Out-of-network ATM fees not reimbursed
#3

SoFi Checking and Savings

One account for spending and saving, with early direct deposit.

8.3
Price

No monthly fee

Best for
Salaried workers who set up direct deposit.

What we liked

  • Combined checking and savings in one product
  • Early access to direct-deposit pay
  • No account fee

What we didn't

  • Best terms require a qualifying direct deposit
  • Cash deposits via retail partners only
#4

Chime Checking Account

A stripped-back account built around the phone.

7.6
Price

No monthly fee

Best for
People who want the simplest possible mobile account.

What we liked

  • No monthly fee and no minimum balance
  • Fee-free overdraft cover on eligible deposits
  • Simple, fast app

What we didn't

  • Chime is a fintech, not a bank — deposits are held at partner banks
  • Limited joint-account and lending features

The verdict

Ally's Spending Account is the soundest default: no monthly fee, no overdraft fee, real support hours. Capital One 360 is the pick if you want a counter to walk into occasionally, and SoFi makes sense if your pay arrives by direct deposit. Chime is the simplest app of the four, but understand that it is a fintech with partner banks behind it rather than a bank itself.

Common questions

Is my money as safe at an online bank?
Where the provider is an FDIC-insured bank, deposits are protected to the same $250,000 limit as at a branch bank. Where the provider is a fintech, the money sits at partner banks — check which ones and to what limit.
Does opening an account hurt my credit score?
Most banks run a soft identity check for a deposit account. A hard check is normally only made where you also apply for overdraft credit.

Specifications and list prices come from each manufacturer's own product page. Offer prices are read from the retailer at the time shown next to the price and are not supplied by the brands.

Why you can trust this comparison

THRYV publishes the criteria before the shortlist, scores each product against them, and states plainly where a figure comes from the manufacturer rather than our own testing. Prices change constantly — we publish only offers we checked ourselves, with the time we checked. We may earn a commission from the links on this page; it never changes a ranking or a score.
