Insurance pricing is individual: the same four insurers can each be cheapest for a different driver on the same street. So we compared what does not change with your postcode — the cover on offer, how claims are handled, what the telematics programmes really do to a premium, and where each insurer is consistently competitive. Always run at least three quotes before renewing.

The shortlist in detail

#1Best for claims

Amica Auto Insurance

The claims-service pick, at a price that reflects it.

8.8
Price

Quote-based

Best for
Drivers who care more about the claim than the quote.

What we liked

  • Consistently strong claims-satisfaction record
  • Dividend policy option returns part of the premium
  • Clear policy documents

What we didn't

  • Rarely the cheapest quote
  • Not available in every state
#2Best value

GEICO Auto Insurance

Usually the cheapest of the big four for clean records.

8.5
Price

Quote-based

Best for
Cost-focused drivers with no recent claims.

What we liked

  • Competitive premiums for clean driving records
  • Mature self-service app
  • Wide discount list

What we didn't

  • Claims satisfaction trails the service leaders
  • Fewer local agents
#3

Progressive Auto Insurance

Best odds of a workable price after a blemish on your record.

8.2
Price

Quote-based

Best for
Drivers other insurers price harshly.

What we liked

  • Competitive for drivers with tickets or an at-fault claim
  • Snapshot telematics can cut the premium
  • Strong online quoting tools

What we didn't

  • Telematics can raise the renewal as well as lower it
  • Add-on pricing adds up
#4

State Farm Auto Insurance

The agent-led option, useful when you want a person.

8.0
Price

Quote-based

Best for
Households that prefer a named local agent.

What we liked

  • Large local agent network
  • Good young-driver and student discounts
  • Simple bundling with home policies

What we didn't

  • Online-only servicing is weaker than rivals
  • Pricing varies widely by agent territory

The verdict

Amica is the one to choose if the claim matters more than the quote, and its dividend policy softens the price. GEICO is usually cheapest for a clean record, Progressive is the realistic option after a ticket or at-fault claim, and State Farm is the pick when you want a local agent to call.

Common questions

Does a telematics programme always reduce the premium?
No. Some programmes only discount, others can increase the renewal based on recorded braking, mileage or night driving. Check which type you are joining.
How often should car insurance be re-quoted?
Every renewal. Insurer pricing models change annually and loyalty is rarely rewarded.

Sources

Specifications and list prices come from each manufacturer's own product page. Offer prices are read from the retailer at the time shown next to the price and are not supplied by the brands.

Why you can trust this comparison

THRYV publishes the criteria before the shortlist, scores each product against them, and states plainly where a figure comes from the manufacturer rather than our own testing. Prices change constantly — we publish only offers we checked ourselves, with the time we checked. We may earn a commission from the links on this page; it never changes a ranking or a score.
