A cashback card only pays if the balance is cleared every month; carrying a balance at card interest wipes out any rate on offer. With that stated, we compared four no-annual-fee cards on the rate a normal household earns without gaming categories, the cost of using the card abroad, and how honestly the terms are presented. Intro offers change constantly and are not scored.

The shortlist in detail

#1Best overall

Chase Freedom Unlimited

Flat-rate cashback with useful bonus categories on top.

8.9
Price

$0 annual fee

Best for
A single card to put everyday spending on.

What we liked

  • No annual fee
  • Flat rate on everything plus higher rates on travel and dining
  • Rewards transfer into the wider Chase points system

What we didn't

  • Foreign transaction fee applies
  • Approval is credit-score sensitive
#2Best flat rate

Citi Double Cash Card

The simplest high flat-rate card: earn when you buy, earn when you pay.

8.7
Price

$0 annual fee

Best for
People who do not want to think about categories.

What we liked

  • High flat rate with no categories to track
  • No annual fee
  • Long-standing, stable product

What we didn't

  • Second half of the rate only lands when you pay the balance
  • Foreign transaction fee applies
#3

Wells Fargo Active Cash Card

Flat cashback with cell-phone protection attached.

8.4
Price

$0 annual fee

Best for
Households wanting one predictable rate plus a small perk.

What we liked

  • Unlimited flat cashback
  • No annual fee
  • Cell-phone protection when you pay the bill with the card

What we didn't

  • Foreign transaction fee applies
  • Redemption options are basic
#4

Discover it Cash Back

Rotating 5% categories, best for people who will activate them.

7.9
Price

$0 annual fee

Best for
Organised spenders who track a calendar.

What we liked

  • High rate in rotating quarterly categories
  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee

What we didn't

  • Categories must be activated each quarter and are capped
  • Acceptance abroad is narrower than Visa or Mastercard

The verdict

Freedom Unlimited is the best single card for most households, because the bonus categories cover ordinary spending. Citi Double Cash is better if you want one rate and no thinking. Active Cash adds a small phone-protection perk, and Discover it only wins for people who will reliably activate the rotating categories each quarter.

Common questions

Does cashback cost anything?
Not directly, but interest on a carried balance will exceed any cashback rate several times over. These cards are only worth holding if you clear the statement in full.
Do card applications affect credit scores?
Yes. A card application normally triggers a hard credit check, which can lower a score slightly for a few months.

Sources

Specifications and list prices come from each manufacturer's own product page. Offer prices are read from the retailer at the time shown next to the price and are not supplied by the brands.

Why you can trust this comparison

THRYV publishes the criteria before the shortlist, scores each product against them, and states plainly where a figure comes from the manufacturer rather than our own testing. Prices change constantly — we publish only offers we checked ourselves, with the time we checked. We may earn a commission from the links on this page; it never changes a ranking or a score.
