The takeaway

Walmart is recalling about 4.48 million Expert Grill wire brushes whose metal bristles can detach and stick to food or grates, risking internal injuries serious enough to require surgery. The brushes, sold since 2021 for $1 to $28, span five model numbers. No injuries are reported; Walmart offers a full refund or store credit, and shoppers should stop using them.

Walmart is recalling about 4.48 million Expert Grill wire bristle brushes after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said their metal bristles can detach, stick to a grill grate or food, and be swallowed, risking internal injuries serious enough to require surgery.

What's being recalled

  • Model numbers: EX5607031616002, EX5607031616003, XG1310700206, XG1136178597003 and XG1410700124.
  • Sold exclusively at Walmart stores and Walmart.com from January 2021 through August 2026, for $1 to $28.
  • Manufactured in China; imported by Walmart, Inc. of Bentonville, Arkansas.
  • CPSC recall number 27-010, announced October 1, 2026.

The hazard

According to the CPSC, the brushes' thin metal wire bristles can break off during cleaning and transfer onto the cooking grate, where they're easy to miss and can end up stuck in food. Swallowing a bristle can cause cuts, internal bleeding or puncture injuries that may require surgical removal. No injuries have been reported in connection with this specific recall, but wire-bristle grill brushes have drawn emergency-room attention for years.

What to do

Stop using the recalled brushes immediately. Return them to any Walmart store for a full refund, or contact Walmart for a store credit. Check the model number printed on the brush handle or packaging against the list above before your next cookout.

A recurring category of recall

Wire grill brushes have drawn repeated CPSC action over the years because stray bristles are hard to spot once they're mixed into food. Consumer groups have long recommended switching to bristle-free grill-cleaning tools, such as coiled stainless-steel scrapers or nylon-pad brushes, to avoid the ingestion risk entirely.
