How bright is too bright

Federal regulations cap low-beam headlight brightness at 125 candela. Testing on the affected headlamp assemblies, supplied by Marelli Automotive Lighting, found some units reaching up to 230.1 candela — nearly double the legal limit — which can increase glare and reduce visibility for oncoming drivers.

A recall Tesla tried to avoid

This isn't a new discovery. Canadian testing first flagged the issue in 2023, and Tesla petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to resolve it without a formal recall. NHTSA denied that petition in July 2026, forcing the recall now underway. Tesla has cited no accidents or injuries tied to the issue, reporting only three warranty claims and one field report related to the headlights.

What Tesla owners should do

Unlike many recent Tesla recalls, this one cannot be fixed with an over-the-air software update — the recall paperwork does not indicate any software remedy. Affected owners will need the headlamp assemblies physically replaced at a service center. Tesla plans to mail notification letters to owners by September 15, 2026.

Check if your car is affected

Owners of 2017–2023 Model 3 and 2020–2023 Model Y vehicles can check recall status by VIN through Tesla's own recall lookup tool or NHTSA's VIN search at nhtsa.gov.
