What's actually wrong

NHTSA's filing says the root cause is movement between the wiring harness and nearby components, combined with insufficient protection against abrasion. Over time, that can expose the wiring, causing intermittent shorts and arcing that could ignite nearby flammable parts. Drivers may notice smoke coming from the air vents or a warning message on the instrument cluster before any visible flames appear.

The fix — and the catch

Ford dealers will install convolute sheathing with abrasion tape over the wiring harness at no cost to owners. But as of this week, most owners likely haven't heard about it: Ford's notification letters aren't scheduled to go out until August 24. Owners who want to check sooner can contact a Ford or Lincoln dealer directly, or call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 26S55.

What to do now

If you own a 2021–2026 Bronco, you don't have to wait for the mailer. Call your Ford dealer or Ford's recall line to check your VIN and schedule the free repair.
