The decisions that actually determine whether a laptop is still worth using in three or four years sit elsewhere: how long it keeps receiving security updates, whether its components can be serviced, and whether you specified enough memory and storage at purchase, because both are frequently soldered and unchangeable afterwards.
Check the update-support window before anything else
Operating system vendors publish, and periodically update, minimum hardware requirements and end-of-support dates for each release. A laptop bought near the end of a chip generation's supported life can fall outside a future major update's requirements much sooner than a laptop of similar specification bought earlier in that generation. Manufacturers of business-oriented machines typically publish separate commercial support and driver-update timelines; checking these directly on the manufacturer's support pages, rather than assuming parity with consumer models, avoids an unpleasant surprise partway through the machine's expected working life.

Buying the minimum configuration to save money at checkout is one of the more common regretted laptop purchases, because the shortfall only becomes apparent once the workload has grown to fill it and the option to add memory no longer exists.
- Confirm from the manufacturer's own specification page whether memory and storage are user-replaceable on the exact model and configuration you are considering, not the product line in general.
- Buy toward the upper end of memory you can justify for the machine's expected working life, since it is frequently the constraint that determines when a laptop starts to feel slow.
- Treat storage upgrades after purchase (where possible) as a lower priority than getting memory right at the point of sale.
