The takeaway

INMO International Technology Limited has recalled about 1,643 Air3 smart glasses sold in the U.S. after 10 reports of overheating, including burns to users' faces and ears, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced September 24. The $900-$1,300 AR glasses' left temple can overheat during extended use; INMO is offering a free software update to fix the defect.

INMO International Technology Limited has recalled roughly 1,643 INMO Air3 smart glasses sold in the United States after receiving 10 reports of the device overheating, including burns to the face and left ear, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced September 24. About 120 more units were sold in Canada.

What's wrong with the glasses

The CPSC says the left temple of the Air3 — an augmented-reality headset that displays a heads-up screen and pairs with a companion app — can overheat during extended use, creating a burn hazard. The agency's recall notice cites reports of "a burning sensation to the face and the left side of the ear." No injuries requiring medical treatment were disclosed in the notice.

The glasses sold for between $900 and $1,300 through Amazon.com, INMO's own site (inmoxr.com), and a Kickstarter campaign.

How to get the fix

Unlike many hardware recalls, INMO's remedy doesn't require mailing the product back. The company is offering a free repair through a system software update to version V3.16, which it says resolves the overheating defect.

  • Stop wearing the recalled Air3 smart glasses immediately
  • Update the device to system version V3.16 through INMO's official channels
  • Contact INMO at 888-212-9620 (9 a.m.–5 p.m. ET, Monday–Friday) or support.usa@inmoxr.com with questions
  • Visit inmoxr.com/pages/recall and select "Product Recalls" for step-by-step instructions
